5 Common Signs You Need Forklift Repair

Nov 16, 2022

Forklifts provide a valuable service to companies that have to move large or heavy items. All the moving parts in this piece of equipment mean you need to ensure it's maintained properly. Failing to upkeep maintenance on a forklift can lead to major problems. This could ultimately lead to it needing to be replaced. Here are five signs you need forklift repair.

1. Service Hours

At a minimum, you need to have a forklift serviced every 250 service hours, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This is a chance to check the forklift to ensure there aren't any problems occurring that should be addressed before they become too serious. Each regularly scheduled maintenance appointment should include changing the fuel, oil, and air filters. The frame and lube points should be lubricated as well. All systems, including the drive train, electrical, brake, steering, hydraulic, and safety systems, should also be serviced.

2. Odd Noises

A forklift that's grinding or making other unusual noises should be serviced immediately. Forklift repair companies will need to know what sounds the forklift is making so the technicians can determine how to correct the problem.

3. Visible Emissions

You shouldn't ever see smoke or fluids coming out of a forklift. If you see these, you need to find out what's going on right away. This means tagging the forklift out of service and having it checked by a certified forklift repair technician.

4. Worn Out Parts

Parts worn on the forklift can lead to safety hazards. If you notice bald tires, worn chains, broken hydraulic lines, or similar issues, have a forklift repair company take care of those issues. You also need to have it evaluated if you notice jerky movements when you lift or lower the forks.

5. Safety Incident

A safety incident, such as a forklift being struck by an object, means the forklift needs to be tagged out of service until it can be fully evaluated. If you're getting the forklift serviced after an incident, be sure to have them check the structural integrity of the entire unit. Cosmetic issues could signal something more serious is wrong with the forklift.

Taking care of a forklift can help to ensure you get the most use out of it. Be sure that you always put safety first by never using a forklift that's not suitable for service. If you're looking for trusted forklift services, turn to Coastal Forklift & Hydraulics, Inc today.
